NADH
The reduced form of NAD+ — the same molecule, carrying the electrons it has accepted.
Why it matters
NAD+ and NADH are not two different ingredients. They are two states of one molecule, and the ratio between them is what the cell actually regulates.
Key points
- NAD+ becomes NADH by accepting two electrons and a proton.
- NADH delivers those electrons to the electron transport chain.
- Once it hands them over, it returns to NAD+ and the cycle repeats.
- The NAD+/NADH ratio is a core measure of a cell's redox state.
