ATP
The molecule cells use to carry energy from where it is released to where it is spent.
Why it matters
Food is not used directly as fuel. Its energy is converted into ATP first, and it is ATP that powers movement, transport, and synthesis throughout the cell.
Key points
- Full name: adenosine triphosphate.
- Energy is stored in the bonds between its phosphate groups.
- Most ATP is produced in the mitochondria.
- It is continuously spent and regenerated rather than stockpiled.
