Golgi Apparatus

The cell’s sorting and packaging system for proteins and lipids.

What it is

The Golgi apparatus is a stack of flattened membrane sacs. It receives materials from the ER, modifies them and sorts them for delivery in small membrane packages called vesicles.

Why it matters

The Golgi helps deliver molecules to the cell membrane, other cellular compartments or outside the cell. This supports processes such as enzyme secretion and communication between cells.
