Ribosomes

Small structures that read genetic messages and assemble amino acids into proteins.

What it is

Ribosomes are made of RNA and proteins and have large and small subunits. They read messenger RNA, or mRNA, and join amino acids in the order needed to build a protein.

Why it matters

Ribosomes make proteins used as enzymes, receptors and structural components. This protein production is essential for cells to function, replace worn components and support tissue repair.
