Nucleolus

A region inside the nucleus where the cell begins assembling its ribosomes.

What it is

The nucleolus is a dense region of RNA and proteins without a surrounding membrane. It produces and processes much of the ribosomal RNA and assembles ribosomal subunits.

Why it matters

By helping build ribosomes, the nucleolus supports the cell’s ability to make proteins needed for growth, maintenance and repair.
