Nucleus

The compartment that houses most of the cell’s DNA and helps regulate how its instructions are used.

What it is

The nucleus is enclosed by a double membrane called the nuclear envelope. It contains chromosomes, which carry DNA, and one or more nucleoli.

Why it matters

The nucleus stores genetic information and is where DNA instructions are copied into RNA. This helps cells produce the molecules needed for their specialized roles.
